Finding the Right Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are worn to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism

Our team will guide you through a comprehensive contact lens exam and fitting to determine how your eyes react to different lenses.

At Insights Optical, the patient experience is of the utmost importance, so our contact lens services are designed around finding our patients the right fit for their visual needs.

What to Expect During Your Contact Lens Exam

Your contact lens exam will include tests and measurements to determine that your contact lenses fit correctly and comfortably.

Your eye doctor will check your visual acuity to determine how well you see letters and symbols from a distance, similar to a comprehensive eye exam. Your eye doctor will also review your lifestyle needs and preferences to build your contact lens profile.

Following your evaluation, your doctor will confirm whether your eyes produce enough tears for comfortable and safe contact lens usage.

Types of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses fall under 2 main categories, soft contact lenses, and rigid gas permeable (RGP).

Soft contact lenses are made of soft, flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea. Newer materials include silicone-hydrogels to provide even more oxygen for your eyes.

RGP lenses are more durable than soft contact lenses and usually last longer. RGP lenses require a longer adjustment period, and it can take up to a few weeks for your eyes to fully adjust

These 2 categories include other specialized contact lenses that are used to correct various vision problems.

MiSight Myopia Management Lenses

MiSight myopia control lenses are soft contact lenses designed to help correct nearsightedness in children. These lenses not only correct myopia but work to slow the progression of myopia in children aged 8 to 12 at the beginning of treatment.

Your children can experience clear vision with MiSight myopia control contact lenses.

Toric lenses are designed to help correct astigmatism. These lenses are available in both soft and gas-permeable designs. Toric lenses contain multiple powers, one vertical and the other horizontal, to allow the lenses to center correctly on the eye.

Toric lenses generally require more time to fit, and you may need additional fitting help from your eye doctor.

Bifocal contacts have more than one power and allow patients to have clear vision at near and far distances. Bifocal contact lenses are available in both soft and gas-permeable designs and can be used to correct age-related presbyopia, astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia.

Disposable contact lenses are soft lenses that can be discarded on a daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.

Because of the regular replacement schedule, protein deposits that can affect vision, comfort, and overall eye health do not build up like they can with longer use contact lenses. Disposable contact lenses are low-maintenance, however staying consistent with the replacement schedule is essential.

Extended wear contact lenses come in the gas-permeable or soft lenses style and are designed for up to 30 days of continuous safe wear.

Sleeping in extended wear contact lenses can pose a higher risk of infection and abnormal blood vessel growth in the cornea. These lenses require frequent follow-ups with your eye doctor.

Tinted or cosmetic contact lenses are soft lenses that allow patients to change the color of their iris. These lenses come in various colors and can provide a subtle or dramatic change in your eyes.

The Contact Lens Fitting Process

The fitting process is vital to determine your comfort and vision correction levels while wearing your new contact lenses. The fitting process begins with assessing the health of your cornea using a biomicroscope. This process gives your eye doctor a magnified view of your cornea to determine if you can wear contact lenses without issue.

Following testing, you’ll be fitted with trial contact lenses, and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to confirm your lenses fit comfortably and safely.
