Causes & Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eye syndrome is a common condition that occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears to stay lubricated, or something has gone wrong with the tear production process. A lack of tear production can lead to eye inflammation and damage to your cornea.

Some common signs and symptoms associated with dry eye syndrome include:

  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurry vision
  • Watery eyes
  • Stinging, scratching, or burning sensations

Because your tears provide lubrication, dry eye syndrome can occur when the glands that produce your tears become inflamed or cannot produce enough tears to provide lubrication. When this occurs, other conditions may affect your eyes, such as:

  • Long-term contact lens wear
  • Exposure to wind or dry air
  • Allergies
  • Staring at a computer for long hours

Dry eye disease appears more commonly in people aged 50 and older. Underlying conditions such as allergies and thyroid disease can increase the risk of developing dry eyes.

Dry Eye Treatment

At Insights Optical, we strive to help you find relief from dry eyes by providing various treatment methods.

iLux Thermal Pulsation

The iLux Thermal Pulsation treatment treats dry eyes caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). MGD occurs when glands within your eyelids get blocked, or are not operating to their fullest and impact the tear film.

iLux Thermal Pulsation treatment gently unblocks these and can provide relief from dry eye syndrome caused by MGD.

BlephEx is an in-office procedure that treats inflammation of the eyelids. This inflammation can be a symptom of dry eye syndrome, and BlephEx can provide some much-deserved relief.

BlephEx works by cleaning the accumulated bacterial biofilm and plaque along the edge of your eyelids and eyelashes. The procedure lasts around 6 to 8 minutes, and numbing drops may be used prior to the procedure for patient comfort.
